WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?

Chances are, you may never have been asked that question.  Other people have all sorts of ideas about the skills they think you need for success in life, but the only person who really understands what motivates you is you

This is an opportunity to take control over your own learning.  What are you curious about?  What motivates you to want to know more?  What do you want to do with your knowledge?

Philosopher Ivan Illich said, “Most learning is not the result of instruction.  It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting.”  Our approach to learning doesn’t start with instruction as it might in a typical classroom.  Rather, it begins with your passions and helps you construct meaningful settings in which to learn.

In a way, it is like intellectual therapy.  You come to us with your objectives, your talents, your anxieties and your challenges.  Then, we work together to figure out how you can channel your energy into knowledge, which translates into power.  Power to get better grades.  Power to develop intellectual relationships with both peers and adults.  Power to write transcendent college essays.  And, most importantly, power to lead a meaningful life.

Along the way, we will engage you in critical dialogue about your learning.  We will challenge you to think broad and to think different.  We will also:

  • help you locate meaningful, high-quality resources and familiarize you with the research process,

  • help you identify credible sources and separate fact from fiction,

  • pair you with others who can give you unique perspective on your work, or who might have specialized expertise in the topic you want to learn about,

  • engage you in discussions about the moral, ethical and environmental impacts of your work,

  • help you effectively communicate your knowledge to others,

  • empower you to ask more questions.

In a nutshell, our approach is your approach.  You determine what you want to learn.  Then we work together to make it happen.
